The UK onesie trend is still going strong but whilst last year was all about Scandinavian inspired skiing style onesies, this year those in the know are getting their hands on a fab kigurumi costume. If you like to stay one step ahead of the fashion crowd then read on to find out all about the latest and greatest UK onesie trend.

What is Kigurumi?
The word ‘kigurumi’ derives from two different Japanese words – nuigurumi, which means stuffed toy and kiru, which means to wear. It originally referred to cartoon animal costumed performers who are commonplace in Japanese theme parks and malls, but now the word’s meaning has grown to incorporate the animal costumes themselves.

Japan has long been a leader in alternative fashion with various Harajuku styles finding their way to British shores. The country’s ‘California Girls’ who favour the bleach blonde, fake tan look were the first to begin wearing kigurumi costumes as streetwear. The trend soon caught on across Tokyo and thanks to the huge popularity of onesies, Kigurumi costumes  are now the hottest fashion item to have in the UK too!

How to Wear Kigurumi
There’s a huge array of different kigurumi costumes available so whether you fancy being a frog, a wolf or a tiger, you’ll find the costume to suit you. Kigurumi costumes are warm, comfortable, easy to wear and large enough to be worn over clothes. The majority of costumes are front fastening and hooded so to get that fun, warm and cosy feeling, all you need to do is slip on your costume, fasten your poppers, pull up your hood and your outfit is complete.

Where to wear Kigurumi
In the UK the Kigurumi trend started on the Cosplay scene and if you’re into Comicon and similar events, they’re a great easy costume to slip on that you’ll still stand out from the crowd in, without having to spend endless hours perfecting your manga look.

Clubbing and Festivals
As with many Cosplay trends, Kigurumi costumes quickly migrated from the manga scene into clubs and festivals and are a really fun item to wear on a night out or a weekend away at your favourite music fest. They’re incredibly easy to wear and will keep you warm too, which is essential for the unpredictable weather you can expect on the UK festival circuit.

Streetwear
If you want to make a real statement with your kigurumi costume then wear it out and about. Get your friends to join in too and become your town or city’s first kigurumi clan.

Stag and Hen Nights
These days no stag or hen party is complete without costumes – a printed T shirt simply won’t do any more! If you’re planning a stag or hen event then animal costumes for your whole party will make your party just that little bit different and help your group to bond.

So whether you’re a fashion forward manga lover or simply want a fun and funky onesie to wear around the house, choose a kigurumi costume and enjoy being an animal whenever the mood takes you!
